Research shows very clearly that even amongst people with disabilities, people with intellectual disabilities are one of the most marginalised groups in Sri Lankan society.  Children with intellectual disability are the least likely to be in school and the most likely to drop out before primary education is complete.  Adults with intellectual disabilities are the most likely to be unemployed and the least likely to be receiving any form of vocational training.  Families with a child or adult with intellectual disability are likely to be living below the poverty line.  I.D.E School seeks to change this in some small way by giving children an education and equipping them with the skills needed to live independently and to be included within their communities.  Through our work with parents we will also seek to work with society in order to change attitudes towards children with disabilities.  We hope to expand our awareness raising work in the future.
